The 2012 Home Depot Heisman Memorial Award ceremony took place in New York and was one to remember having invited five college football superstar athletes that are a big part of each of their BCS Bowl Bid teams. The ceremony invited RB Ed McIntyre of Kansas, WR Bradley McDougald also of Kansas, RB Alan Timmons of TCU and RB Caleb Porzel of Maryland. Bradley McDougald was no stranger to this event and former TCU Horned Frog Michael Tucker took home last years award. Last years Return Man of the Year, Caleb Porzel is a juniour out of Maryland whose breakout campaign consisted of 1500 yards rushing and 20 TDs.
In the end, the 2012 Heisman Memorial Trophy Winner was true freshman Marc Payne out of Mississippi.
Payne entered the season as a highly touted 4* prospect that Mississippi felt would probably do best on their redshirt squad. Payne emerged as not only the fastest but biggest playmaker in a RB corps that each have at least two years of college experience on him. Payne single handedly delivered touchdown after touchdown week in week out for the Rebels and is without a doubt the reason they rallied to win their third SEC Championship. The dynamic speed, elusiveness and ability to read blocks and find open space is unmatched and Payne ensures it's only the beginning.
"It's such an honour to be up here especially to be in a group that consists of these four fine young gentlemen. I look at each one of these guys and remember this time last year I'd be watching college football and see these young stars emerging. Caleb Porzel is one of my idols just the way he carries himself on the field. The fact that I'm even in the same group as him is amazing. I've been given the honour of countless opportunities here at Ole Miss and I just wanted to work as hard as I could and make the most of all the opportunities. Whatever it took, I'd be one of many on our team who would answer at the call of duty and I'm just glad my team got the #1 job done, winning the SEC. It's a great honour to bring the Heisman to Oxford for the first time and I don't want to sound cocky but - I hope next year brings me the same opportunity!" Payne said during his emotional speech.
The Arizona prospect plans to spend the next week back at home with his family in Arizona with the trophy sharing it with his child hood community and friends. Payne will be on a one way flight to Louisiana in preparation for the Sugar Bowl against Kansas following that.
