Georgia Tech Wins Despite Sloppy Play

Coral Gable, Florida-The Miami Hurricanes were not about to back down no matter how well the Yellow Jackets have played so far this season. The Hurricanes put up a valiant fight and were in the game until the last couple of minutes. Miami got the ball first and made moving the ball on the previously dominant "Wrecking Ball Defense" name given by Michigan Coach Rich Rodriguez, look easy as they drove down the field for a touchdown. As is typical with the Georgia Tech offense they answered right back with a long drive and touchdown of their own on short run by Heisman candidate Jonathan Dwyer. Both defenses were able to adjust slightly and control their opponent better as only three points were scored by either team in the next four combined drives. Miami had a 10-7 lead and was driving to add to the lead, when superstar Derrick Morgan came up huge for the Jackets. First he was able to get around the edge to sack and temporarily injure Jacory Harris. On the next play Derrick shed a blocker and got into the backfield again. This time he was unable to get the sack, but forced a pop-up throw into the waiting arms of CB Reid who dashed 60 yards into the endzone for the 14-10 Tech lead. Just when it looked like the Rambling Wreck would take over the game and cruise to another big victory Miami RB Cooper returned the ensuing kickoff 101 yards for a touchdown. Georgia Tech was able to recover just before halftime when Nesbitt hooked up with Sims with just six ticks left.

In the second half whenever it looked like Tech was going to pull away Miami was able to make a play. The Yellow Jackets tacked on a field goal to go up 24-17 on the first drive after halftime, but would be stifled until the last three minutes in the game. Miami made another drive as Jacory Harris led his team down the field. Harris was able to connect with his receiver with just under five minutes left to tie the game 24 a piece. Georgia Tech once again responded when Anthony Allen danced into the endzone to regain the Georgia Tech lead at 31-24 with three minutes left in the game. On Miami's next possession the Wrecking Ball defense came up with another big stop. On third down and five Derrick Morgan was able to get Jacory Harris in the backfield for his tenth sack of the season. Morgan had been frustrated all game as he had been just a hair shy of a sack on several different occasions, but was on time when it mattered most. On fourth-and fifteen with two minutes left Miami decided to punt and hope for a stop. The Canes defense could not make a play when they needed to and Georgia Tech was able to put the game away with another Allen touchdown this one coming with less than a minute to play. The Yellow Jackets were able to escape nineteenth ranked Miami with a 38-24 win. A visibly upset Paul Johnson walked off the field without talking to any reporters.

Jonathan Dwyer was able to put up solid numbers despite having a poor game by Coach Johnson's standards. He had 23 Car for 153 Yards and a Touchdown. Derrick Morgan didn't have as good of a game as the first two weeks, but was still very disruptive and added to his nation leading sack total jumping from eight sacks to ten. Reese had his best game of the year for the Jackets recording 15 tackles. Allen and Nesbitt also chipped in with 68 and 69 rushing yards respectively. Statistically it was the worst game of the season for Georgia Tech giving up 328 yards of offense, 93 on the ground and 235 through the air.

Next week Georgia Tech will finally get to play on Saturday again. They will get to prepare a few extra days for there big game with currently #18 North Carolina. This will be yet another huge game for the Yellow Jackets as the winner will have a stranglehold on the Coastal Division.

Turner Carries the Load against rival Baylor

Week Three Discussion - Page 2 Joseph%20Turner

Ft. Worth....

Joseph Turner led the TCU Horned Frogs to a solid 38-25 victory against rival Baylor. With the sloppy weather Coach Patterson relied on the bruising back to carry his team and carrying is just what Turner did. He rushed 30 times for 213 yards and 3 TD's and even pitched in a nice screen pass reception and took it to the house. Turner says. " IN this kind of weather you cant really pass to much, so I knew this game was gonna rely on me getting going, I credit the O-Line as they paved the way for my big day.

The Baylor Bears came in ready to play as the kept the game close throughout, but the defense got enough stops when it counted. "I was proud at the way our defense kept battling out there today. The conditions were not the best, and give Baylor credit they defineatly have some playmakers, they were going to make plays, we just had to limit them." Coach Patterson said.

TCU also had a couple of recruits take in the rivalry game, and is hoping to seal the deal with them very shortly as they can serve as the leaders of this class, and maybe sway some other players to get things rolling in Fort Worth.

Player of the Game:

RB Joseph Turner- 30 Car, 213 yards 3TD's ; 4 rec 79 yards 1TD
LE Jerry Hughes ( AA Candidate)- 6 Tak, 3TFL, 1 Sack
