| Hickerson resigns, offered job in less than week
In the midst of a 4 game losing streak, and swirling controversy over recruiting in South Bend, Coach Jeff Hickerson resigned as the head coach of the Fighting Irish. Many wondered, would he ever be a college head coach again after the controversy surrounding his arrival in South Bend. Many thought it would be years befoe someone would get the courage to offer him control over their football program. It only took 1 week. A school in the PAC 10 has came calling to Coach Hickerson and he has a accepted a job offer to coach the Arizona State Sun Devils, just weeks after their coach resigned due to stress of the job. Coach Hickerson will inherit a 4-4 record in an attempt to guide the Sun Devils to a postseason bowl game. We will see now can Coach Hickerson resurrect his coaching career? Or maybe Coach Hickerson was all hype. Let's be fair, he never did anything special at MTSU, he competed in what many consider to be the weakest BCS conference, never won it, only had 1 really good season. He happened to know the right people, and landed a gig at the most prestigious school in the country, started 5-0 then slipped up, 4 games in a row, and got out of dodge so to speal. So is he a good coach, a great coach, or merely a man who happens to know the right people? Arizona State is hoping for for the answer choice in the middle - a great coach - and they will find out very soon.

Gruden leaving the Huskies for Texas A&M After the Seattle Times reported that Texas A&M President Bubby Thompson and asked for permission to talk with UW Coach Jon Gruden about the new vacant Aggie job, (The sudden death of head coach Mike Sherman, who choked on a T-bone Steak at a local Texas Roadhouse Restaurant was a shock to the College Football World). Once word leaked out that Coach Gruden had accepted the position, and would take over at the end of the season felt it was best to move immediately. In a statement, Coach Gruden said, "I really wanted to finish out the season with this Husky team, but once word had leaked out, felt it was best to move now in an effort for the new staff to keep this recruiting class together, and for me to get to work at A&M"...."Tonight will be my last game as a Husky coach as we take on the Oregon Ducks, then I will be on a flight to Texas after the game".... Sighting the need for a change, and Gruden wife family is from the area, "it just felt like the right time to make the move"....Aggies are having a good season, and I hope I can keep things as steady as possible, these kids are in shock with the sudden death of there coach"...Also reported that Gruden salary will be doubled from 2.2 million a season to a package well over 4.7 a season for the next 5 years was something UW just couldn't match.

| Arizona State and Oregon State about to kick off..... Coach Hickerson makes his debut for the Sun Devils... whirlwind of reporters surrounding him as he leads his team on to the field:
Reporter: Coach, what are you looking for out of your team tonight?
CH:Well, I obviously want to win, we obviously want to win, but I wanna see them compete, there is nothign better than seeing a group of 19 and 20 year olds lay it all on the line for their university... its Halloween, we got a talented roster... lets play football. Have a good one, I am just happy to be here.
Reproter: Booth, back to you, you can tell Coach Hickerson is proud and happy to have this opportunity,

| Arizone State rolls, 42 to 25 in Hickersons debut Arizone State started slow, but finished fast, and strong. After trailing 10-0 with less than 3 minutes in the first half, Arizona State went on to otuscore the beavers 45 to 15 led by a very balanced offensive attack. "Our defense settled down, made some plays, and then our offense went to work, I was very pleased with the effort out there today. We have a lot to improve on, but that is definitely a start we can all be happy with," said Hickerson of the effort. Backup running back, junior, Clinton Webb led the way for the Sun Devils, carrying the ball 12 times for 121 yards and 2 touchdowns. "It felt real good, knowing the new coaching staff has faith in me, Justin got a little nicked up, and I ran well, the line opened up things for me and I made the most of my opportunity," said Webb. Starter, Justin sapp, who did go in and out of the game with injuries carried the ball 17 times for only 40 yards, but did have 2 touchdowns. Sapp also caught a 28 yard screen pass for a touchdown. Senior quartberback Matt Sullivan played a good game after a slow start, he finished the day 13 for 21 for 252 yards and 2 touchdowns after the early interception. Senior Sam Simmons led this defense to an impressive performance after the very slow and sluggish start, Simmons had 8 tackles, includign 1 for a loss, and a forced fumble. "We started slow, real slow, scary slow honestly. But we never panicked, that was the most important thing to take away from todays game, we got down early, but never, not once, looked to get away from our game because we all had faith in each other. We knew the defense would come around, we knew we would contineu to run the ball and get production, and we knew our great quarterback would make plays. Today was a great team victory, and I couldnt ask for a better way to come into this football family" - Coach Hickerson | |
