Coach Macc plans to hit the recruiting process hard in his first year here at Ole Miss. While the Rebels coaching staff is impressed with the interest from quality prep athletes thus far Coach Macc will not take no for an answer for some of the high profile athletes and he plans to spend the majority of his alotted weekly time convincing these kids that Ole Miss is the program of the future.

"We understand the fundamentals of recruiting and the importance that our first class will have for our future years here. There's plenty of interest from some of the best kids in the country but a few we'd like to see in a Rebels jersey left us off their pre-season top 10. We're sure that some early scholarship offers will increase interest and let these kids know who wants them on their team immediately. There is some serious voids to fill on our offensive and defensive line and we will address those issues with the best quality players we possibly can. While I can't mention any names just yet - I will tell the Rebel faithful that were very interested in acquiring a couple quarterback prospects and there are tons of great athletes with cannons for an arm. We're looking for the speedy quarterbacks who can accurately throw the ball. We've got great confidence in our quarterbacks coach who is the best in the business at making something out of nothing. We hope these kids will see the type of season we're hoping out of Ray Cotton and realize that this is a futurusitic offence that takes no prisoners. We will be hitting the trail hardin search for a quality OLB who can come into our program and start from day one next season. Running backs are worth their weight in gold and we will offer as many kids scholarships as possible in that regard,"

Scouting Report
On The Hoof - He is well built for his small frame. He has worked on gaining mass throughout the winter and it's showing. His frame could easily handle another 10-15 pounds and that would help him become one of the most physical wide-outs to date.

Needs Improvement - Protecting the ball, general ball skills, wide-out awareness. All three that are just about as developed as you could expect out of High School. A year of red-shirt will certainly help these areas.

Most Impressive - His jumping and the ability to go up and make catches. Despite his height, he's not afraid to challenge anyone at a loose ball and he finds a way to come down with the vast majority of them. Extremely impressive release for a high school prospect. Should have no trouble getting off the line on bump-n'-run coverages and should make big plays down field when doing so. Will be a tough match-up during his upperclass years.

Reminiscent Of - Hines Ward. The type of wide-out that will do everything so well that not one part of his game sticks out. He is a work-horse and his small(er) wide receiver body type will certainly have the ability to throw some big blocks especially on defensive backs at the college level.

Conclusion - He will most likely serve as a red-shirt to gain five full years of experience. He is currently best fit for the slot-position, a position that the Rebels have recently used - a lot. An early in-state commitment may be just what the Rebels need for a rather slow start to their recruiting. They found a great kid whose intent on working hard every day.

Scouting Report
On The Hoof - Ryne is a bit undersized for the tackle position, thankfully he'll have plenty of time to grow under neath a very young talented core group of tackles on the Rebels depth chart.

Needs Improvement - His stamina is questionable. He needs to improve his overall ability to contribute on his side of the ball every play unless he wants to be a situational guy. He's had a history of injury problems in the past but with some more size on his frame and strength this could be a concern addressed immediately.

Most Impressive - Overall strength. Despite being undersized for an O-Lineman he's got incredible strength and is about as strong as you could possibly expect a kid to be at this age. He'll have no problem man handling D-Linemen and Linebackers when he's ready to start.

Reminiscent Of - Chris Snee. His overall ability to do EVERYTHING well without any flaws is a direct correlation to the Giants guard. He's around the same size Snee was in college and we wouldn't be surprised if he had a similar career.

Conclusion - He will without a doubt serve as a redshirt next fall to gain experience in practice as well as grasp the teams method of running and pass blocking. He is very unfortunate to be underneath tons of young talent at his position but will be a key starter by his junior/senior year.

Pulled from an interview with Coach Macc regarding recruiting.

"Our coaching staff has recently decided to completely reconstruct our recruiting list. We've realized a couple key home losses for us have shyed some of the higher level recruits away from our program so what we've done is cut our list specifically to players who currently WANT to go to Ole Miss,"

When asked about losing out on some big name recruits...

"We were neck and neck with Stanford about signing SS prospect George McKinney. We recently discovered he pulled the trigger with Stanford last week and we had a feeling he would after about an hour long conversation with him. We're going to keep on plugging for a MLB prospect we're in tight with Iowa about so hopefully he see's the light with the way our MLBs have been playing and comes our way,"

When asked about any soft commitments or players he thinks will be Rebels next year...

"There's two specific offensive skilled position players we're very interested in signing and one of them has actually admitted he's softly committed to us. They're both Louisiana prospects and they both could have a huge impact on our team immediately. QB Frank Larsen is nearly committed to us and doesn't appear to have any interest in another school and WR Ashton Baker is the soft commit. Larsen is extremely underrated at just three stars but we feel he has the skill set that makes him one of the most elligible starting candidates out of ANY QB in this class. 4.62 40 speed and an extremely accurate arm - what more could you ask? As for Baker, he's got great speed and his ability to make clutch catches boggles our minds. He needs to improve his ball skills when not covered but his agility and skills when the balls in his hands make him look like a young Dex,"

Scouting Report

On The Hoof - His height is about as good as you can get for the position and he's got long, lanky arms that will allow him to compliment his jumping and spectacular catch ability. He could use some extra weight and strength to get off his release quicker and become nearly undefendable.

Needs Improvement - Release. His release needs a lot of work and fast if he wants to see playing time. He also could use some work on his skills with the ball in his hands, his speed just getting to the outside is nice but some moves would certainly help his career. His hands are average and ball catching drills would help.

Most Impressive - Speed. He has deceptive speed for such a tall receiver. He is a threat to burn corners down the sideline and his ability to go up and get balls, allready being four inches taller than the average DB just compliments his height. His big play ability is consistent throughout the entire game and the way the Rebels run their "rush first, pass later" offence he could certainly help them especially in the wide-out role that Ray Cotton likes to throw the deep ball to.

Conclusion - Despite being under rated, the Rebels are big on Blake and his current skills. Due to lack of height within the Depth Chart at WR at Miss, he could be the starting wide-out next year with Lionel Breaux and Markeith Summers being more slot-inside guys. He could be the #2 basically so that he would be consistently on the outside every play and taking an opponents better corner off of another receiver. It's in the air right now depending on how players progress but Ole Miss would certainly love to have his height on the corner.

Reminiscent Of - Dwayne Jarret at a young age. He's got very similar, tall skinny size to him and he's a big-time threat if he's not closely guarded.

The first week of the offseason has proven to be the Rebel's best week thus far, possibly garnering interest over their 28-0 sweep of the Pittsburgh Panthers in the Sugar Bowl. Coach Macc didn't take a vacation or any time off in fact he's been hitting the recruiting trail hard looking for the best possible players he can find. There's been some big developments as Rivals updated their top 100 with tons of new faces that flew under the radar this football season.

"We've found some serious playmakers that flew under the radar and even some guys that flew under our's and plenty of other teams in this league. We've got a big time 5 star WR we'd love to sign because we're confident that our future in the WR position is very bright. You can't have enough playmakers at this position and he would by far be the biggest playmaker from day one. The great thing about kids playing WR in high school is that it's reactive and that means lots of these kids have room for positional changes. I wouldn't be surprised to see one of a couple of them made a defensive back with all that speed and if that happens they'll certainly serve as a redshirt so they have a year to learn. We're happy here at Miss to announce we've signed WR Ashton Baker (4*) G Chris Sims (4*) and QB Frank Larsen (3*),"

On The Hoof - He's small but what he lacks in size he makes up for in speed and agility. This kid will have NO room for improvement with the ball in his hands because he's allready as good as it gets. Sure fire punt and kick return specialist with his ability when he's in stride.

Needs Improvement - Overall ball skills and release. He won't need to improve his jumping because it's unlikely he'll be thrown many "jump balls". His best shot at playing time is in the slot where he'll be a guy that gets the ball in his hands quickly. He drops far too many easy passes.

Most Impressive - Outstanding catch ability. This kid makes some grabs you'd think were a certain incompletion. He is electrifying when he has the ball in his hands and will be a threat for WR screens against any team that plays the Rebels in the future.

Conclusion - He's small but he's shifty. The Rebels in recent memory have found positions for guys who play like this and have typically ran offences dependant around them. He will most likely be used next year to return kicks as their big-time return man has graduated. He has excellent ball handling skills for this position so he will be one of the biggest return threats in the country.

Reminiscent Of - Steve Smith. The type of guy that's small but still a BIG threat. He's got the speed to burn some and the skills that if he's got the ball in his hands, look out. He's the type that finds ways to make plays even if you'd miss him if he was standing behind a lineman.

On The Hoof - His size is perfect for this level of play at his position.

Needs Improvement - Sims doesn't have very many flaws in his game. He's progressed about right where Rivals has projected him and no one skill really needs more work than all others. He's the all-around offensive lineman that will do everything WELL not great.

Most Impressive - Run blocking. He's terrific at pushing DLinemen off of the line and making holes for his backs with brute strength. His overall run blocking ability is about middle of the pack at this stage.

Conclusion - Chris will be a steady lineman for the Rebels at some point. Depending on injuries and the way the others around him at Miss play - he could see playing time but it probably won't be until he's NEEDED there or he's earned his spot.

On The Hoof - This position allows for different body types to be dominating. Frank will be a great player if he can mature physically and grow into his build. He would look most healthy at the 205 range where he would have an easier time pounding would-be tacklers instead of just trying to avoid them.

Needs Improvement - Quarterback knowledge. He isn't the best signal caller or game manager out of high school, but don't let that fool you. He can make big time decisions and he's got the suave to be a starting QB. He would be a 5* if he was more aware of the QB position and if he had better stamina.

Most Impressive - Athleticism. Frank can do everything WELL. He broke the mould for dual-threat QBs with the unusual ability to have better touch on his ball as opposed to strength. He throws a very nice deep ball but what's really impressive is his accurarcy on it. On short, bootleg roll outs he is as good as you could expect from this level.

Conclusion - Frank has almost guarenteed his spot as the back-up but Coach Macc may want to use him later and make him a red shirt. If he red-shirts it will certainly be due to depth chart and other players eligibility and nothing to do with his talent or skill at QB.

Finalized 2009 Recruiting Commitments

The Ole Miss Rebels finished their recruiting season on a high note. They brought in their only 5* product in WR Trey Talbot. Talbot's long-time friend and high school teammate, T Ryan Whittaker was a big help to the Rebels landing his commitment as he was an "under the radar" prospect through the middle of the season, only really having a break-out campaign towards the end leading his Adamsville-Minor Tigers to a state championship. Miss also stole a SS commitment from Stanford's California reigon in SS Jeremy Thompson. Thompson had Stanford as #2 on his list the entire off-season. The trip to visit the Minor Tigers also included an in home visit to Alabama native Guntersville High CB Nick Faulk, 3 star.

On The Hoof - Big, physical wide out that has all the skills to match his body type. He's a tad skinny but he has plenty of time to grow and strength training will help his ability to get off of the press and into open field to make plays. He's a deep threat but at his best with the ball in his hands quick.

Needs Improvement - Ball handling. He could certainly help himself becoming 5-tool wide-out (speed, strength, size, skills and return) by hitting the weight room and improving his ability to not get jammed up. Ball drills in practice will certainly improve his ability to hold onto the ball.

Most Impressive - Swagger. Trey has the star wide-out personality and he feeds off of receiving punishment and making big plays. He has the skills to back up his attitude on the field and the Rebels program is extremely impressed how coachable he is. He is a threat to beat you deep and will never shy away from going through the middle. His all-around ability to make plays is what's really most impressive about him.

Reminiscent Of - Chad Ochocinco. At camps all spring while Trey was making plays, scouts couldn't help but make the comparison after some of his celebrations and antagonistic ways. None of the defensive backs took a liking to him. Trey is, however much more toned down in his attitude. He's a colorful wide out but he knows where to draw the line. He will have the same impact getting into the heads of anyone trying to guard him much like Ochocinco. Also very similar in size.

Conclusion - Talbot is going to be a true freshman starter at wide out. His size and skills are too advanced to keep him off the field. He will be a great fit for the Rebels as they shift their depth chart to compliment their upper-class receivers. This will allow their playmaker Lionel Breaux to play his natural slot position.

On The Hoof - Thompson is built like a pass rushing linebacker with his wide shoulders and thick build. He's a tad short to be an elite safety and should have most of his problems in jump balls with tall wide-outs.

Needs Improvement - Ball skills. He is a great, coverage safety that will help in coverage and run defence. If he wants to be a playmaker he needs to work on his ability to make plays when the balls in the air.

Most Impressive - Awareness. He's a very solid all around safety who will quietly be a great player. He's going to have to step up because of the Rebel's tendencies to have big plays out of their safeties. He also has great leadership qualities.

Reminiscent Of - John Lynch. While he may not possess Lynch's amazing ability to lay the hammer, his lateral movement and big play ability remind us of John Lynch.

Conclusion - The Rebels made it a point to recruit this guy so don't be surprised if he sits only behind senior Johnny Brown for a year. He will need to work hard and pay attention to the way Brown can manage a game by himself. He will be a second year starter and will be called on if the injury prone Brown cannot stay healthy.

On The Hoof - Monster looking kid with a good proportioned body. He's tall and lanky and really breaks the mold of the typical offensive tackle.

Needs Improvement - Pass blocking. His footwork isn't where it needs to be to have him be in consideration for a starting position. He isn't terrible but should spend the year working hard on this aspect of his game.

Most Impressive - Run blocking. He is a steady, mobile run blocker and his athletic size and build allow him to move exceptionally well. He won't make ball carriers wait for him with excellent speed at this position. He won't ever make the highlight reel with his impact blocks but will be a good steady blocker that rarely lets off his block.

Conclusion - He certainly adds depth to the young linemen core on the Rebels. While he may not be ready to play or start, most of his redshirt year will be spent in the weight room and working hard on the practice field. He's drowned in young talent at O-Tackle and is projected to play right tackle.

On The Hoof - Perfect size to be a coverage corner at the college level. He will be about the average size of most slot receivers so he won't have too much trouble getting out-sized.

Needs Improvement - Press. He needs to improve his ability to press receivers at the LOS. He doesn't have very many areas of flaw in his game, he's pretty well-rounded and sound.

Most Impressive - Speed. He is a burner on corner and won't have problems getting beat in open field. His ability to go up and break up passes is uncanning at this point in his career. He has amazing all-around skills that will be refined but make him a sure-fire candidate to be an impact player by his junior year.

Reminiscent Of - Randal Gay. He's very similar and size and posesses a lot of the same skills as Randal and even looks a lot like him.

Conclusion - The Rebels are really big on this kid despite being overlooked by a lot of the big-time college programs. They feel that he has some serious raw-skills that they can build on. He has everything you could want out of a corner at this age and he will be a big playmaker in his career.
